UTZ means 'good' in a Mayan language. Eight years ago the UTZ CERTIFIED program started, as a partnership of coffee producers and buyers, in Guatemala. Douwe Egberts was one of the first partners in the UTZ program. Nowadays, UTZ CERTIFIED is the largest certification program for sustainable coffee worldwide.

The concept of coffee quality among consumers is growing. Taste is important, but there is also growing interest in the conditions in which coffee is made. Coffee producers who are UTZ CERTIFIED comply with the UTZ CERTIFIED Code of Conduct. This is a set of economic, social and environmental criteria for

responsible production. The code includes good agricultural and business practices, such as proper training for workers, annual internal inspections and the traceability of coffee, and also lays down important social criteria, such as ensuring workers have access to healthcare, decent housing and clean drinking water. It also includes several environmental conditions, such as optimized use of sustainable energy sources and the responsible and minimal use of agrochemicals. UTZ provides training for coffee farmers enabling them to become better businessmen. Sustainably grown and traceable products provide a better market position for farmers, enabling them to improve their livelihoods and future. UTZ CERTIFIED provides the assurance of ‘good inside’ quality products, grown with care for people and the environment. The result?
